“It’s typical to put lights in the wall above the treads. I just wanted to do something different.”
Derek and Hannah live in a beautiful modern home in the middle of the Arizona desert. Their off grid home is a testament to their hard work and ingenuity. From clearing the land to framing to maintaining the road with personal equipment, this couple has built a modern oasis from the ground up with their own hands.
“We built this house exactly as we wanted, down to the very detail,” Derek informed us. “We didn’t want to make any compromises, and I think we nailed it.”
As soon as you walk into their home, the floating stairs are the first thing you notice. Framed with a whitewashed wall as the backdrop, the stairs float effortlessly from the main entryway up to the second floor. From the deep chocolate finish on the hickory treads to the continuous Onyx rod infill ascending upward, the system makes a statement.
Derek continued, “I look at building a house the same way that you build your life. You start off with a set of blueprints, and through focusing on the blueprints, you set a vision for yourself. That helps you escape the rat race and build a meaningful life. It’s life by design, and it’s something that you’re choosing for yourself. We want everything to have meaning and purpose, and we feel our home reflects that in every aspect.”
The crowning detail of this system is the LED lighting under the treads. It not only adds a warmth to the home, it allows it to shine on a whole new level.
