Frequently Asked Questions
General
Yes. We offer a glass top cap that includes integrated LED lighting.
Our LED lighting is positioned on one side of the railing so that the light shines down from the handrail — not through the glass. Why? With other top caps, the lighting shines down through the glass, creating a blue or green glow, whatever the color of the glass is. Our white light is unaffected by the glass and remains whatever temperature you set it at.
The system is dimmable with compatible drivers/controllers and supports approximately 2400K–6500K color temperature options, depending on the strip specified.
It’s possible but labor-intensive. Retrofitting requires routing treads, drilling the stringer for wiring, and fishing the harness. We strongly recommend planning LEDs at the time of order.
Yes, our LED strips can be used outdoors. If a strip is cut, seal the exposed end with silicone.
The standard 6008 isn’t designed for LEDs, but custom widened options are available that mimic the glass LED top cap look. Contact us for custom solutions.
Technically yes, an LED strip can fit in the base channel groove, but it tends to highlight glass imperfections and fingerprints. We recommend the LED top cap, which places light outside the glass for a cleaner effect.
Installation and Repair
It depends on local code. We recommend hiring a licensed electrician and following your jurisdiction’s permitting requirements.
Yes. Viewrail always recommends the final installation be done by a licensed electrician.
Your electrician provides 120V power, any conduit, junction boxes, and (for railings) the driver/controller unless noted.
We provide:
- Stair Systems: LED strips, wire harness, controller/receiver, two switches, and the power supply/driver.
- Handrails: LED strip only. Driver/controller is not included.
We handle the low-voltage harness for FLIGHT Mono. Your electrician brings 120V to the driver and makes final connections. For other stair types, the harness is installed on site.
- FLIGHT Mono: Viewrail installs the low-voltage harness inside the stringer. Your electrician must pull 120V through the stringer and connect it to the driver/power supply inside the stringer.
- All other stairs: The LED harness is installed on site by your installer/electrician.
24V DC. Your 120V AC line feeds a driver/power supply that converts to 24V DC for the LED strips, with a conduit to protect against the steel. We will follow up with the exact location and lead length.
It depends how tall your header is, and where the header plate lands. If the header is less than 15” tall, it could be at risk of exposed wires. Usually, the bottom looks cleaner. If it’s a switchback or U system, power can enter the stringer at the platform wall.
Short answer: The prior all-in-one drivers were discontinued and driver placement varies by job. For exterior runs, waterproof and long-range control requirements differ.
- All-in-one drivers we used previously were discontinued by the manufacturer.
- The driver size and placement depend on your unique site wiring and available locations.
- Our interior wireless controls are not waterproof and may not have the range needed for some exterior runs.
- We can coordinate with the LED manufacturer to help you select the right driver/control package for your project.
To repair any damaged lights, you'll need to replace the entire affected strip.
