Cable and Rod Railing Buyer's Guide

How to Buy Cable and Rod Railing

Step 1: Choose Your Railing System

Five Ways to Buy

Five Ways to Buy

Signature is made to order, so you choose the infill, finish, and handrail. Express is our most popular configuration, in stock and ready to install yourself. DriveTite drills straight into wood posts you already have. Steps 2 through 5 cover Signature; skip to step 6 for the two DIY systems.

Step 2: Select Your Infill

Infill

Infill

The material that runs between your posts. Stainless cable suits straight runs. Stainless and Onyx rods hold a curve, so they can follow a stair or a radius the cable would have to fake.

Coastal ratings depend on the finish you pair with the infill, not the infill alone. Stainless rod is always coastal-rated; cable and Onyx rod can be, within five miles of salt water.

LED Lighting

LED Lighting

Run LED strips inside your handrail for a soft wash of light along the whole run. Wiring is organized inside the rail and connects to your power system.

Learn more about LEDs
Full wire concealment and power supply connection cannot be guaranteed in every configuration. Customer must provide driver/controller for LED handrail.

DriveTite Infill

DriveTite Infill

Cable or rod, tensioned straight into the post. Every fastener buries itself inside the wood, so the infill is the only thing you see. All hardware is 316 marine stainless.

Kits are sold individually, one for every place a run of cable ends. A 36-inch post takes ten per post, a 39-inch takes eleven, a 42-inch takes twelve. Level kits for decks, angle kits for stairs.

Wood Posts

Wood Posts

DriveTite tensions straight into hardwood posts, new or existing. Where posts land more than four feet apart, an Express metal line post can sit between them to carry tension across the span without adding a single fastener to the posts.

Explore DriveTite
Hardwood only. Posts need at least 3.5 inches of depth. Space cable every 3 1/8 inches vertically, and keep posts within four feet of each other to stay inside the IRC 4-inch sphere rule.
